I describe myself as a get-by Photoshop user. If I can do it, anyone can. Here’s a tutorial describing how to create a simple text logo for your website.
The Text Logo Created In This Tutorial
Photoshop Text Logo Tutorial Video Transcript
Before you start a new graphic in Photoshop it’s generally a good idea to set the current tool to the Move tool and the foreground and background colours to black and white. You select the move tool like this and then you click this little symbol here to reset the foreground and background colours.
I’m going to create a file that 600 x 200 pixels so that it’s large enough for me to easily see what I am doing, and then at the end save it a the appropriate size. To do that I’ll click on File, then new, and set the dimensions to 600 x 200 and also set the resolution here to be to 72 pixels per inch and then click on OK. Now I’ll select the text tool holding my left mouse key down on the T and making sure I have the horizontal type tool selected.
Did you know Photoshop Creative Cloud is available
for under $10 per month?
Then mindful that I am using whatever font happens to be already selected and making sure that the font size is not too big nor too small, I’ll start typing my logo which is going to be the two words, Simple Logo. Then I’ll click on the check mark. Now I’ll work on getting the logo in right font and at the right size. Making sure that I am on the text layer, and that I still have the text tool selected I’ll highlight the text and select the font I want to use. I’ve chosen to use Oswald.
Next I’ll change the font size, to 72, that’s as large as it goes, but I will actually manually change that to 96 and I will also increase the spacing, the horizontal spacing between the characters by clicking here tp bring up the character and paragraph menu, and then increasing the number in this box to, let’s say, 100. And then I’ll click on the checkbox and then on the Move tool to allow me to bring this into the middle.
Next I’ll draw a horizontal line under the main logo and I’ll do that by locating the brush tool, pressing down and then selecting the pencil tool. I’ll change the colour in the foreground from black to grey and then click on OK. Next I’m going to create a new layer so that I can draw my horizontal line on a new layer. And then making sure that there is a 1 in this box here, that means that the line I draw will be 1px wide, I’ll just position my cursor underneath the “S” and holding my SHIFT key down to ensure that my line is completely straight and horizontal, I’ll draw a line along the width of the logo.
Next I want to add the tag line under here, so to do that I must select the text tool. I want the tag line to be in grey so I’m going to change the colour here. I want the tagline to be in Oswald, but in a different weight, I’m going to choose light, and also make it considerably smaller than the main logo. Then I can position my cursor and start typing. Once I’m done I can click on the check mark.
I’d like the tagline to extend to the same width as the line above it. I can do this in a couple of ways. I can certainly make the font a little bit bigger. Right now if I highlight it, it’s at 36px. The next size up is 48 which will make it far too big. So I’m just going to change it to 40 manually. And then hit the check-mark.
This makes the tagline almost the same length. To achieve the same length I’m going to use the horizontal spacing that we did earlier for the logo, so I’ll highlight again, and this time, click on this symbol if you don’t have it, but here’s the character tab which gives me the ability to put a little bit more space here if I want to and I’m just going to do it manually. 110 is nearly correct so let’s just change that to 115, and that more or less does it so I click on the check-mark.
All that’s left to do now is to choose two colours to apply to the words “simple” and “logo”. To do that I make sure I’m on the text tool, and that I’m actually on the text layer for simplelogo, and then hover over the word simple until I get that particular cursor shape and then highlight and now I can choose a colour for that word, I’ll choose this one, then click the check-mark, and I can highlight the other word and choose a colour for that one which is this one and click the check-mark and that’s my logo.
