How Do Keyword Research Tools Work?
In most keyword tools you proceed through 6 steps.
Keyword Research Step 1 – Create A Short List Of Seed Keywords
This is where you dream up a handful of keywords called seed keywords. You can use any technique you like to come up with these initial seeds.
You might use your own imagination, or type a few ideas into Google and see what else they suggest.
This step, no matter how you choose to go about it, is required for all keyword tools and is pretty easy to do.
This step is done before you start using a keyword research tool.
Keyword Research Step 2 – Expand Keyword List
Next you enter the seed keywords into your keyword tool. The tool will take those initial keywords and go searching for others that are similar or related to them.
The point of this step is to data mine, or uncover more niche related keywords that you would not have thought of by yourself.
Each keyword tool is different. But eventually, after some intervention from you and some work by the tool, you’ll turn your initial 10 seed keywords, into a list of supposedly related keywords, anywhere from 100 to 10,000 keywords long.
I say supposedly as typically the whole thing will spiral out of control.
You’ll churn out large numbers of keywords that are either nothing to do with your niche or are to do with your niche but are worthless to you for various reasons.
Also, accept that at this point you will have a headache.
Sadly – this is normal and is also when most people get confused, go and lie down, and/or give up.
One problem is that the process becomes somewhat circular and repetitive as it edges you further and further off topic.

Keyword Research Step 3 – Remove Low Traffic Keywords
Now that you have an enormous keyword list, it’s time to ask your keyword tool to remove all those that do not get searched for often enough. All keyword tools will let you know how many times approximately, per month, a keyword is searched so you can decide the minimum searches per month to tolerate. This will be your individual decision.
For example, you might eliminate all keywords that are searched for fewer than 100 times per month, 30 times per month, 500 times per month, or some other number to suit you. This will prune the list of keywords down, removing all those that have insufficient traffic potential for your needs.
If you are using SECockpit, you can ignore this step.
Keyword Research Step 4 – Remove Off-Topic Keywords
Next you can remove any keywords that are not relevant to your niche. These would have been added during the big keyword expansion phase at step 2.
As this is a manual process, it makes sense to do it after the previous step as there will be fewer keywords to sift through and make a decision about.
It’s a time-consuming step but if you don’t do it when using a normal keyword tool your results will be cluttered with lots of keywords that you can never use and it may make the list unwieldy.
Don’t worry – if you are using SECockpit you can also ignore this step.
Keyword Research Step 5 – Remove Difficult Keywords
At this point you will have mined a lot of keyword data with a view to figuring out which ones are Keyword Gold. Next you have to remove all the keywords that you do not stand a chance of ranking on page one of Google, for.
Keyword Gold is when a keyword is heavily searched for, while at the same time being easy to rank on page one of Google because hardly anyone is trying to rank any authoritative sites/pages for it.
So Keyword Gold = lots of searches + little or no competition.
To figure out if you have found any Keyword Gold you have to check the competition of each and every remaining keyword (Holy Moses!).
There are lots of checks to make. To do all the work manually for large numbers of keywords quickly, is impractical.
Have no fear – if you are using SECockpit this step is effectively already done for you.
What Do Most Keyword Tools Do?
Most keyword tools will get you to click a button for each keyword whose ranking difficulty you want to check. This makes an already tedious process, mind-numbing.
Each check – as there is so much to do – takes about a minute – or sometimes more. If it takes any less time, the checks the tool is performing may well be ineffective and therefore likely to return misleading data.
For example, some keyword tools actually count the number of competing pages (as reported by Google) for each keyword and then commute this into some sort of difficulty score.
But even if they make better evaluations than that, this stage of the process is always painful as it requires so much manual intervention, time and thought, with most tools.
What Does SECockpit Do?

Keyword Research Step 6 – Organise Your Golden Keywords
Most keyword tools make this step very time consuming, and complicated. It usually involves a lot of cutting and pasting and manipulation of keyword data using Excel spreadsheets.
