A member of the Genesis Club asked how to create a simple favicon – now called a Site Icon – using text in Photoshop. Site icons are best if they’re extremely simple, consisting of few flat colors, without shadows, shading or bevelling.
You can make a Favicon out of any image as long as it is simple and views well at very tiny sizes.
For example on this site I use the coffee cup symbol.
It just about works – I even included the froth on top.
In this video I create a simple favicon out of some text. Normally I would upload this to my site using the Genesis Club Pro plugin, but recently WordPress added this functionality to the WordPress core.
Either way, it’s easy to provide your site with extra branding using a favicon. Also it makes it easier for users to identify your site when they have many tabs open on a browser. Each tab should have the site’s favicon or site icon at the left.
